Tree Acer × freemanii 'Marmo' [Marmo Freeman Maple] The Marmo Maple has similar characteristics to its Silver Maple parent, more so than to its Red Maple parent. This cultivar produces staminate flowers, and therefore is seedless. 'Marmo' fall color ranges from reds to greens. Once established, it becomes tolerant to most pests and disease.
Tree Acer × freemanii 'Scarsen' [sold as Scarlet Sentinel®] [Scarlet Sentinel Freeman Maple] This cultivar is a cross between the Red Maple and the Silver Maple, though it's leaves and bark more closely resemble the Silver Maple. It is one of the most adapted maples for southern regions of the country. 'Scarsen' is known for its colorful yellow-orange to orange-red fall foliage and columnar growth form.
Tree Acer glabrum [Rocky Mountain Maple] This species can withstand moderate drought and coarser soils better than other maples, but prefers moist soils that are sligthly acidic.
Tree Acer grandidentatum [Bigtooth Maple] A densely branched tree with shiny green lobulate leaves on top and silvery beneath. It has a bright fall color of red, yellow, and orange as well as yellow corymbose flowers in spring. The samaras resemble moth wings.
Tree Acer grandidentatum 'Schmidt' [sold as Rocky Mountain Glow®] [Rocky Mountain Glow Maple] Acer grandidentatum is closely related to Acer saccharum (the Sugar Maple), which it is often compared to. This variant stands out due to its more upright form, smaller size, and its brilliant orange-yellow and orange-red fall foliage.
Tree Acer griseum [Paperbark Maple] Slow growth (6-12" per year) is compensated for by longevity and freedom from maintenance. The cinnamon-brown, curly bark is outstanding. Habit is open enough to display bark interest year-round.
Tree Acer × 'Hipzam' [sold as Highland Park®] [Highland Park Bigtooth Maple] Acer grandidentatum is closely related to Acer saccharum (the Sugar Maple), which it is often compared to. 'Hipazam', often sold under the name of Highland Park, is an upright variant with an oval crown and lustrous, deep green leathery leaves that turn an attractive orange-red in autumn.
Tree Acer maximowiczianum [Nikko Maple] The Nikko Maple is a small, vase-shaped tree that has year-round interest, especially due to its attractive, smooth gray to grayish yellow bark. This tree was discovered in Japan in the 1860s by Carl Johann Maximowicz, hence the specific epithet name; the town of Nikko, Japan contributes to the common name. It is rare in its native habitat today.
Tree Acer miyabei [Miyabe Maple] Attractive bark is grayish with long, vertical scales and fissures in maturity. Some difficulty in both vegetative and seed propagation.
