Special Characteristics: Invasive :  Indiana Prohibited Sale

The Terrestrial Plant Rule (312 IAC 18-3-25) designates species of plants as invasive pests. This rule makes it illegal to sell, gift, barter, exchange, distribute, transport, or introduce these plants in the State of Indiana. This rule went into effect April 18, 2019.

Unusual form and texture not unlike a large sumac. Highly adaptable. Tolerates salt spray. Dioecious. Coarse and inclined to drop twigs. Male flowers are malodorous; female plants make many weed seedlings. Ailanthus altissima forms dense, clonal thickets which displace native species and can rapidly invade fields, meadows, and harvested forests. Elaeagnus umbellata 'Cardinal'
[Cardinal Autumn Olive]

Elaeagnus umbellata 'Cardinal' was originally introduced by the Soil Conservation Service and is not recommended for the home landscape. Widely adaptable and invasive plant in the Midwest. Like other members of the family, fixes atmospheric nitrogen. Spread by birds and through rooting suckers. Especially tolerant of extreme cold and drought, as well as extreme heat, unlike the related Elaeagnus angustifolia (Russian Olive).

Euonymus fortunei
[Wintercreeper Euonymus]

Best in soil that is reasonably moist, either in full sun or shade, but not heavy wet soils. Can be used as a wall climber (possibly climbing up to 70') or groundcover. Subject to Euonymus Scale that can kill some plants, especially 'Vegetus' and 'Coloratus'. Euonymus fortunei is a vigorous vine that invades forest openings and margins. Can tolerate full sun to full shade. Best in soil that is reasonably moist, but not heavy or wet. Can be used as a wall climber, but is best as a groundcover. Ligustrum obtusifolium var. regelianum
[Regelianum Border Privet]

Ligustrum obtusifolium var. regelianum adds an interesting textural effect to the landscape with its horizontally arranged branches and distichously arranged (in one, flat plane) leaves. An excellent plant used as an informal hedge, but perhaps too coarse to be a good formal clipped hedge. Extremely tolerant of different soils and climates. Can be coppiced to rejuvenate. Can be invasive by seed.
