Ulmus rubra

[Slippery Elm]

The Slippery Elm has a vase-shaped form, similar to that of the American Elm (Ulmus americana), but with more ascending branchlets. This tree gained its common name from the moist, slippery, red inner bark chewed by Native Americans and pioneers to quench thirst. Not considered very ornamental for the landscape, due to its coarse texture, weedy tendencies, and susceptibility to Dutch Elm Disease (although not as severe as the American Elm).

The Elm genus, Ulmus, contains about thirty species of mostly deciduous trees. Generally susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease, which is caused by Ophiostoma ulmi. (Dutch Elm Disease has lead to the near extinction of the American Elm in the US).

Ulmus × 'Patriot'

[Patriot Elm]

'Patriot' is a cultivar with high resistance to elm leaf beetles and Dutch elm disease. It also has some resistance to elm yellows. It has green leaves that have a glossy texture and turn yellow in the fall. It is used many times as a street tree due to its fast-growing nature and its road salt tolerance.

The full-size tree is a fine screening plant. Does best with ample soil and atmospheric moisture. A very dry site exposing the plant to afternoon sun and wind in winter could lead to browning and discoloration. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, it will not regenerate new shoots.

Blue Nootka Cypress forms a dense screen of soft blue-green foliage. The tree is a fast growing evergreen that does not require pruning.

An unpleasant odor is emitted when the leaves are rubbed or crushed. Central leader with arching to horizontal branches with drooping branchlets.
