Shrub Cotoneaster divaricatus [Spreading Cotoneaster] One of the most ornamental and trouble-free of the cotoneasters, although subject to the troubles of Rosaceous plants on occasion. These include lacebugs, scale, mites, and fireblight, but they are not usually a serious problem.
Shrub Cotoneaster horizontalis [Rockspray Cotoneaster] C. horizontalis is a low, flat, dense shrub with horizontally spreading branches creating a tiered effect. A generally trouble-free cotoneaster, although can be subject to the troubles of Rosaceous plants on occasion. Fireblight is more problematic for this species in the South.
Tree Indiana Native Crataegus mollis [Downy Hawthorn] Quite susceptible to cedar-hawthorn rust, with leaves heavily spotted with orange in some years. Rust limits usage in many areas. Large fruit pose a maintenance issue when they drop.
Shrub Deutzia gracilis 'Nikko' [Dwarf Slender Deutzia] 'Nikko' is a compact, dense, and rounded shrub. Nice in flower as they can cover the plant, and relatively pest free. Shrub Euonymus kiautschovicus [Spreading Euonymus] Foliage fully evergreen in the South, but persists for only about half the winter in the North. Although not as serious as in other species of Euonymus, scale insects can be a problem. May be killed to ground in severe winters, but grows back rapidly.
Shrub Hibiscus syriacus 'Minerva' [Minerva Rose of Sharon] Minerva Rose of Sharon blooms in early summer featuring showy flowers that appear lavender with a pink hue and red eye.
Shrub Hydrangea paniculata [Panicle Hydrangea] Very hardy and adaptable plant, difficult to kill. So coarse, the straight species does not always combine well in the landscape. Remove grown flowers late in fall as they are not attractive. Can become straggly and unkempt with age.
Shrub Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight' [sold as Limelight®] [Limelight Panicle Hydrangea] 'Limelight' has large, dense, upright flower panicles that emerge white, change to lime-green, then rosey pink, ultimately becoming beige at the very end. Very hardy and adaptable plant, difficult to kill.
Tree Juglans regia [Persian Walnut] Juglans regia is a large, rounded, spreading tree that produces the walnuts frequently seen in stores. It may take up to 20 years for this tree to become mature enough to produce a decent-sized crop of nuts. Long tap root makes transplanting difficult.
Shrub/Tree Juniperus chinensis [Chinese Juniper] Widely adaptable to soils and climates, except for low light conditions. Tolerates alkaline soils, heat, and drought. Members of this species are used from New England to Minnesota to Louisiana. Phomopsis and Kabatina blights can be a serious problem in some areas, especially for small plants.
