Shrub Cornus sericea 'Baileyi' [Red Twig Dogwood] A shrub with a rounded habit, bright red stems that persist into winter, dark green ovate-laceolate leaves, and white cymes in spring. It has many uses borders, naturalizing, specimen, erosion control, and in moist soils.
Shrub/Tree Cotinus coggygria [Common Smokebush] Usually dioecious, so heavy-fruiting clonal material should be used when possible. Can be pruned to low framework each year to promote plant coloration which occurs best on vigorous stems. Misty fruiting panicles give the species its name. The fine-textured hairs on the fruit pedicels and peduncles change colors, being best when tinted smoky pink.
Tree Crataegus viridis 'Winter King' [Winter King Green Hawthorn] An attractive, nearly thornless vase-shaped small tree with beautiful white flower corymbs and large, bright red persistent fruits. This cultivar was discovered in a fence row by Bob Simpson in Vincennes, Indiana. Very adaptable, although leaves are often badly infected by rust so that the entire plant appears to be suffering from the measles.
Shrub Indiana Native Dasiphora fruticosa [Bush Cinquefoil] Extreme hardiness and long season of bloom make this a favorite in severe climates. Low stature and tolerance of poor, dry soils give it added usefulness in other areas also. Can develop a ragged, unkept habit over time. Remove 1/3 of canes each year (3-year pruning cycle), and consider renewal pruning to a very low framework every 3-5 years if needed.
Shrub Hibiscus syriacus 'Minerva' [Minerva Rose of Sharon] Minerva Rose of Sharon blooms in early summer featuring showy flowers that appear lavender with a pink hue and red eye.
Tree Indiana Native Ilex opaca [American Holly] This species, like other hollies, is dioecious, so plant females for fruit and an occasional male for pollination. Winter desiccation injury can occur on leaves in exposed sites. Holly leaf miners are one of the major pest problems for Ilex opaca.
Shrub Juniperus horizontalis 'Youngstown' [Youngstown Andorra Juniper] Youngstown Andorra Juniper is a cultivar of the creeping Juniper. It has a mounding form and dense branches that give the evergreen its uniform shape. Youngstown offers season round interest with its silver-green foliage that turns bronze in the winter.
Tree Juniperus virginiana 'Burkii' [Burk Eastern Redcedar] 'Burkii' is a pyramidal male cultivar with glaucous silvery blue foliage. Widely adapted to soils and climates. Does well in alkaline soils, but not wet soils. Alternate host for cedar-apple rust disease. Plant other juniper species in areas having many apples, hawthorns, etc. Susceptible to bagworms.
