Large warm tomato-red colored flowers (up to 3.5 to 5" across) with a slightly drooping or horizontally reflexed petals surrounding a spiky central cone
 Foliage Notes:
The foliage is lanceolate to narrowly ovate, arranged alternately along the stems. The leaves have a distinctly coarse, rough texture covered in tiny, stiff hairs.
 Stem Notes:
The stems are upright, rigid, and sturdy. They are covered in same stiff, bristly hairs as the leaves.
 Fruit Notes:
Dry single-seeded fruit called an achene, which is found embedded deep within the spiky scales of the central cone.
