Picea mariana Black Spruce
4-sided needles, dull, bluish green, 1/4 to 1/2" long.
Bark is broken into thin, flaky, grayish brown to reddish brown scales.
Small cones, 3/4 to 1.5" long, purplish to brown at maturity. Cones persist on trees for several years.

Best grown in moist, well-drained alluvial bottoms.
Often grows around bog edges, wet depressions, and swamps.
