Diagnostic Characteristics:
The lustrous leaves (3-5" long and wide) are alternate, simple, triangular (ovate and truncate), and coarsely toothed with red veination. 2-3 glands are present at the leaf base. The red petiole is long (2.5-4") and flattened. The brown buds are glossy and resinous, smelling of balsam. Winged stems. Bark on mature trees is ridged and fissured.
