Shrub/Tree Magnolia liliiflora [Lily Magnolia] Magnolia liliiflora is a shrubby tree that produces large, showy deep rose pink-purple flowers in mid-spring. Foliage is often tattered or altogether absent by late summer or early fall. This species is a parent in many Magnolia hybrids, including the Saucer Magnolia, M. x soulangeana.

This plant was released by the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University in 1972 to commemorate its 100th anniversary. Handsome specimen at all seasons. Shrub/Tree Magnolia × 'Susan' [Susan Magnolia] The Susan Magnolia is a shrubby magnolia that produces long, slender, reddish purple buds openning to beautiful, large reddish purple flowers. 5" slightly twisted flowers are erect and have 6 tepals . Flowes later than Magnolia stellata in Spring, but can also flower sporadically throughout the Summer. Summer flowers are of lighter color due to the heat. Part of the Little Girls Hybrid Series.
Shrub/Tree Magnolia virginiana [Sweetbay Magnolia] Nice flower fragrance, but never overwhelming. Does well in wet soils, unlike other magnolias. Requires acid soil, some moisture, and tolerates some shade. Chlorosis can sometimes be a problem, especially prevalent on alkaline soils.

Shrub/Tree Myrica pensylvanica [Northern Bayberry] Waxy gray berries were used by early settlers for making aromatic candles, and occasionally still are used for this purpose. Especially good plant for full sun and sandy soils, but grows well on many soils. Tolerates half shade. Relatively salt-tolerant. Forms colonies via suckers. Fixes nitrogen in the soil. Dioecious. Use female plants (when known) for fruiting, and occasional male for pollination. Difficult to transplant from field.
Shrub/Tree Picea glauca var. conica [Dwarf Alberta Spruce] This commonly available dwarf variety has a very dense, conical habit. Best in full sun, but tolerates some shade. Withstands heat, cold, drought, wind, and crowding. Slight susceptibility to trunk and root rots, bagworms, sawflies, and mites. Except for its use in the far North, other evergreens have better overall aesthetics for Midwestern and Eastern states.
Shrub/Tree Picea pungens f. glauca 'Baby Blueyes' [Baby Blueyes Colorado Blue Spruce] 'Baby Blueeyes' is a pyramidal, semi-dwarf cultivar with densely set, bluish-gray needles. Some drought tolerance. Cost of most glaucous forms is high because they are produced by grafting and then intensively pruned to shape in nursery rows. Must be used with restraint because the strong blue color does not combine well with other plantings in the landscape. Some susceptibility to Cooley Spruce Gall Adelgid (Adelges cooleyi).
