 Diagnostic Characteristics:
Leaves simple, alternate, ovate to oblong-ovate, 1.3-2" long (and longer), sharply serrate with acuminate teeth, and somewhat rough above. Offset (oblique) at leaf base. Bark heavily lenticelled, reddish brown, and cherry-like when young, exfoliating to reveal orange and brown inner bark at maturity.

Additional Information

'Mushashino' has an extremely upright, narrow, vase-shaped form with tight branching. Zelkova serrata has a beautiful wood grain for furniture, etc. Minor susceptibility to various elm diseases and pests, but resistant to Dutch Elm Disease.
