Massachusetts to Manitoba, south to Georgia, New Mexico and Utah.
 Diagnostic Characteristics:
Leaves are alternate, simple, obovate to oblong-ovate, 2 to 4" long, 1 1/4" to 1 3/4" wide, acuminate, broad cuneate, sharply and doubly serrate, dark green and glabrous, or slightly pubescent on midrib below; petiole - 1/3 to 3/4" long, pubescent, without glands. Flowers are 1" diameter, on slender, 2/3 to 1" long, glabrous pedicel, 2 to 5 together in sessile umbels. Fruits are generally yellow to red, rounded, about 1" long with yellow flesh.

Common shrub or small tree, often forming large colonies along roadsides, in waste areas, and other uncultivated habitats.
