Diagnostic Characteristics:
Thinnish (compared to Hamamelis vernalis) leaves (3-6" long) are narrow toward a small subcordate base, blade halves are often oblique as in H. vernalis, 5-7 pairs of veins. Veins may or may not have pubescence. Leaf margin is coarsely crenate-dentate. Brown buds are naked and tomentose. Stems are more smooth than H. vernalis.
