Foliage Notes:
Green (Evergreen needles that are lustrous, deep blackish-green above with dull green streaks below)
Fruit Notes:
Red;brown (Female plants have a fleshy, red aril that surrounds a hard, brown nutlet; the aril is the only part of Taxus that is not poisonous)
Soil Notes:
Widely adapted to different soils, except those that are poorly drained
Range:
Discovered in Ireland in the late 1700s
Diagnostic Characteristics:
The flat, glossy, needle-like leaves (0.5-1.25" long) are spirally arranged, but generally 2-ranked on horizontal shoots or heavily shaded plants. Dark green (almost black) above with dull streaks below.
