Small, greenish-brown, dense spikelets in large terminal clusters that develop into fluffy, woolly, light brown or reddish-brown bristles in late summer and fall.
 Foliage Notes:
Medium green grass-like, long, narrow leaves up to 1/2" wide that turn yellow-tan in late fall and winter.
 Stem Notes:
Smooth, unbranched, solid, three-angled to round stems.
 Fruit Notes:
Tiny achenes surrounded by persistent, woolly bristles that create the characteristic woolly appearance.
