 Diagnostic Characteristics:
Leaves are 1-2" long, alternate, leathery, often spiny at margin. Stems are slender, yellowish-green, angled, and grooved. Three-pronged spines at nodes (as opposed to the single spine of Berberis thunbergii), especially on longer branches (young stems may have single spine). Bright yellow inner wood. Leaves are more leathery and darker green than B. thunbergii.

Additional Information

An adaptable plant that does well in an urban environment. Can be coppiced with new growth developing better summer color. Can be pruned to ground every 5 to 7 years. Full sun to partial shade. Relatively trouble-free. Large thorns and spiny leaves are a maintenance problem. Collects litter around the base.
