Flower Notes:
Tiny, stemless, greenish-white flowers tightly pack into globular, 1" diameter heads, and resemble thistles. The blooms are attractive to butterflies and other insect pollinators.
Foliage Notes:
Parallel-veined, bristly-edged, sword-shaped, medium green leaves, resemble those of yucca.
Stem Notes:
The smooth, stiff, and stout stems are unbranched until the top, where the spherical flower heads cluster.
Fruit Notes:
Dry, oblong fruit measuring about 4 to 8 millimeters long.
Soil Notes:
Best grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils.
Range:
Native range is the United States, where it occurs in rocky woods, prairies, and glades, and is a common plant of the tallgrass prairie.
