Diagnostic Characteristics:
Scale-like needles (0.05" long) typically occur 4- ranked in opposite pairs near the outside of the plant. A resin gland is visible on bottom (abaxial) of rounded scale leaves. Awl-shaped needles (0.17" long), occur in whorls of 3 in the inside of the plant, and have conspicuous midrib above. Crushed foliage has bitter taste and odor of sabinol. Leaf buds in fall have turtle shell pattern.
