Diagnostic Characteristics:
Predominantly scale-like needles (0.05" long), which typically occur 4- ranked in opposite pairs. A resin gland is visible on bottom (abaxial) of rounded scale leaves. Awl-shaped needles (0.17" long), when present, occur in whorls of 3,and have conspicuous midrib above. Crushed foliage has bitter taste and odor of sabinol. Leaf buds in fall have turtle shell pattern.
