Tolerant of most soils, including clay soils
 Diagnostic Characteristics:
Thickish (compared to Hamamelis virginiana) leaves (2-5" long) are narrow toward a small cuneate to truncate base, blade is often unequal at base (that is, oblique like Ulmus), 4-6 pairs of veins. May be glaucous below. Leaf margin is coarsely sinuate-dentate. Grayish-brown buds are naked and tomentose. Stems are slightly pubescent (not as smooth as H. virginiana).

Additional Information

Earliest blooming shrub for the Midwest. Good as a neutral filler for the border with quiet seasonal interest. More pH tolerant than Hamamelis virginiana. Should not be pruned (tip pinching would be acceptable to direct growth). Not as showy in bloom as Hamamelis mollis, the Chinese Witchhazel, or its hybrids.
