Diagnostic Characteristics:
Leaves (3.5-5.6" long) are simple, obovate, and arise in clusters on short spurs. Flowers (1.6-1.8" across) are large, waxy, and white, tinged red, and emerge from red buds in late April to May. Fruits (0.5" dia.) are red to red-orange and will last into December. Unlike the species of Prunus (which have a single seed pit), the fruits of Malus species have multiple seeds. Buds have several imbricate scales, and are usually reddish-brown with hairs protruding under the scales.
