Diagnostic Characteristics:
Leaves simple, opposite, broad-ovate to ovate, 2-5.5" long and half as wide, dark green above and grayish green and reticulate below. Terminal bud frequently absent, or present in 2s, with 4 pairs of scales. Shiny brown stems and bark are heavily lenticelled (like cherry), which provides a means of delineating this from all other Syringa.
