Range:

Discovered by B.H. Slavin as a witches broom on a Pinus nigra specimen in Seneca Park, Rochester, New York in 1932

Diagnostic Characteristics:

Needles (2-3" long) in fascicles of 2, with 14 waxy lines on each surface. Apex of needle is thickened (horned) and somehat sharp pointed. Buds (0.5-1") are resinous and reddish-brown. No pubescence on young stems. Cones persist 2 years, often with small prickle on scale ends (not as prominent prickles as in Pinus ponderosa cones).

Additional Information

'Hornbrookiana' is a compact and mounded dwarf cultivar. Tolerates city conditions. Tolerates clay, dry, and alkaline soils, and heat. May be badly damaged by sapsuckers. Sphaeropsis tip blight is a more serious problem. Pine foliar nematode (transmitted by a beetle) can also be problematic.
