Very tolerant of soils, however prefers slightly acidic, moist conditions

Eastern and central United States and adjacent Canada
Diagnostic Characteristics:
Leaves opposite, simple, 2-4" long and wide, usually 3 lobed, but often 5. Petioles and stems often reddish. Flower buds imbricate and clustered around node. Scales pointed.
