Widely adapted to soils, except those that are wet
Diagnostic Characteristics:
The blue-green needles are scale-like and held tightly against the branch. New growth is silvery. The red-brown to gray bark is exfoliating, shredding into persistent strips.
'Welchii' is compact and comlumnar with blue-green foliage that is silver when emerging. Widely adapted to soils and climates. Does well in alkaline soils, but not wet soils. Alternate host for cedar-apple rust disease. Plant other juniper species in areas having many apples, hawthorns, etc. Susceptible to bagworms.
