Flower Notes:
Yellowish-green flowers in hairy, drooping pedicles
Foliage Notes:
Green (Dark green leaves during summer months); Multi-Colored (Fall foilage can be orange, red and or yellow)
Stem Notes:
Branches are gray while the twigs can be gray or brown. Has white lenticels.
Fruit Notes:
Brown (Samaras are green then brown to maturity)
Soil Notes:
Prefers well-drained, moist, slightly acidic soils; but adapts to many types of soils including those that are slightly alkaline
Range:
Quebec and New England to New York, West Virginia, and Kentucky, west to South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, and Arkansas
Diagnostic Characteristics:
Leaves are simple, opposite, 3-6" in length and width, broad, light to dull green, with 3 to 5 acute lobes, and drooping leaf tips. Petioles range from 3-5" long and are pubescent and usually enlarged at the base with stipules present (distinguishing it from A. saccharum).
