Diagnostic Characteristics:

Leaves (1.5-2.5" long, .75-1.25" wide) are opposite, simple, ovate to oval, acute, serrate with triangular teeth, slightly pubescent above and on veins below, 5-6 pairs of veins, veinlets are impressed above and below, dark green in color. Petiole (.5-.75" long) is purplish-red. Shorter intervals between nodes (.5-1" apart). Stems are quite smooth.

Relatively small habit, up to 5' and rounded, it produces small panicles of pink flowers in spring. A dense, compact plant, 3 1/2' high and wide. Foliage is similar to the species but smaller. Shrub has an overall appearance of bronze-green. Some winter protection promotes best growth. Early flowering in spring is sometimes followed by a later frost/freeze that kills back the flowers and inhibits leaf growth.
